Is it Time for a New Air Conditioner?

March in Phoenix is truly a beautiful time of year.  The days are bathed in blue skies and warm sunlight, and the nights are cool enough to sleep with windows open to the fresh evening air.  As dreamy as Arizona springtime is, however, locals know to brace themselves for the inevitable heat wave that is sure to hit.  Sweltering days are ahead, and you’ve got to be prepared.  There’s the pool equipment to check and the landscaping irrigation systems to test.  And, perhaps most crucially, you’ve got to make sure your air conditioning unit is in prime condition.

Because home air conditioning units never choose to call it quits at ideal times (it’s usually during important family gatherings.  In July.  At 2:00 in the afternoon.  With everyone in stiff dress-up attire.), right now is an ideal time to check out your air conditioning system, and replace equipment if necessary.  Not sure whether your unit’s time is up?  Here are some ways to tell, and some reasons why it might be a great idea.

Age matters.

If your unit is over ten years old, and needs a repair or two, it might be worth it to invest in a new unit.  You can expect your air conditioner to have a 15 year lifespan on average if it is of good quality and well-maintained.  If you’re pushing that 15 year mark, you may want to start browsing various brands and prices.
Wondering whether to repair or replace?  Use the “5000 Rule” which suggests that you take the age of your unit, and multiply it by the cost to repair it.  If the sum exceeds $5000, it’s likely a smarter idea to replace it. Also, consider how energy efficient your A/C is.  Over the last decade or so, impressive advancements have been made in air conditioning technology, making them much more energy efficient.  It might be worth it to upgrade to a more environmentally sound and budget-friendly model.
It just keeps a-runnin’.  Is it getting harder and harder to keep your home cool?  Rather than blame this solely on global warming, your longer- running A/C time could be a sign that your air conditioner is simply not performing as well as it used to.

Freon foe.

If your air conditioner uses costly Freon as its coolant, then you’ve likely got an outdated model. Freon is giving way to more cost-effective refrigerant R410A, making your old Freon model even harder to repair.

The bad news: you may be faced with the task and cost of replacing your home air conditioning unit.

The good news: you can bring your old a/c unit or parts to Davis Salvage for HVAC Equipment Recycling.  Letting us recycle your old air conditioning unit is a win-win.  Not only is it the environmentally sound way to dispose of it, but Davis Salvage will pay you for bringing it in.  Whether you have furnace parts, window cooling units, rooftop air conditioning equipment, or central air systems, we’ll take it, keep it from ending up in a landfill, and pay you money for bringing it to us.  If your home is due for a new cooling system before the heat of summer sets in, let us help.  And then, come the next family gathering in July, you’ll be SO glad you did.
