Getting Your Student Their First Used Car for School or College

School has started back for some while others are getting prepped for college registration. Whether your kid has already started school or is going through enrollment, you may be realizing something: it’s time they got their own car.

You’ve transported your child around for their entire life, and now it’s finally time for them to get their first real taste of freedom. It can be scary to give up control and have them strike out on their own, but we can at least help make the process of paying for a used car a little easier on you. Be sure to do your research and find a vehicle that fits both your student’s needs as well as your budget. And when you’re ready to buy, be sure to use these essential steps in saving big on a used vehicle:

Use Your Project/Junk Cars to Fund a Down-Payment

The key to getting good financing on a used car is to put as much money down on the vehicle as possible right up front. Why not scrap that old clunker that you swore you’d fix up one day for your kid and put that money towards getting them something reliable? Start the first step of this process by giving us a call at 602-267-7208.

Have Them Work for It

There’s no such thing as a free ride. So have your student chip in by either getting a part-time job, or by giving them our list of salvageable metals. This will allow them to literally scrap-and-save their way to their first car. There’s also a sense of pride that comes with knowing you’ve earned your first vehicle. Salvaging metals obtained (legally) from flea markets, thrift stores and curbside ‘free to a good home’ items can be very beneficial for used-car-fund-raising. Your student can even enlist the help of friends in exchange for rides in the future.

Things to Consider for Their First Used Car

There are many things to think about when choosing the right car for your student. Just as there’s always the right tool for a specific job, there’s also the right kind of car for a student’s situation.

Cargo Space

Finding a car with plenty of room is essential if your student will be hauling things from their dorm (such as laundry) to your house and back.

Safety

Sure, we all like fast cars, but for more inexperienced drivers, go with a used car that’s not only safe, but also reliable. A mechanically sound car will offer safety that comes from not being broken down on the side of the road.

Terrain

You should also keep in mind the type of roads that your kid will be driving on. If they’re going to school in a mountainous or hilly area, consider something more capable such as a vehicle with four-wheel drive.

Mileage

If your student is commuting out-of-state, then a vehicle with great milage is something to look for when researching. Costs of travel can skyrocket with cars that have poor MPG ratings.

Finally: Teach Them Well

It can be very nerve-racking sending your loved ones out into the world, but you can feel comforted by this thought: as long as they keep their eyes on the road and remember everything you taught them, they should be just fine.
